Brainworx bx_XL Quick Review

Brainworx bx_XL is a very interesting mastering limiter. Unlike its most competitors, it works with M / S principle. This gives a totally new perspective to the limiting compared to the normal stereo. Except that the signal can be divided using  M / S principle, the mid signal can be further divided into in two frequency bands and the crossover frequency can be freely adjusted. Voxengo Voxformer, Quick Review

This is a plug-in that gives you instant control on many things in your DAW´s  channelstrip. Voxformer is quite easy to use. It has built in spectrum analyzer which helps you to see quickly the possible problem frequencies on your track. It has two separate compressors and they both have independent controls. You can also use them as two band multiband compressor with adjustable cross over point.

What else do you get with Voxformer? There is five band equalizer with shelving lows and highs and the rest three bands are fully parametric. For vocal tracks there are de-esser and multiband gate. There are also precence control and saturation control to give some characteristics to the sound if desired. You can control dry/wet mix if you want, which is often a useful feature.

What about the sound then? I´d say it sounds ok. Of course there are better equlizers, compressors and de-essers out there, but still, this is a versatile and handy tool for many situations. I could use it on drum tracks, guitars and maybe for vocals too. I found it very useful tool for making a killer kick drum sound, which is another story…

+  versatile tool

+ quick to handle

Wave Arts Tube Saturator, Quick Review

Wave Arts claims that their Tube Saturator is the world’s most accurate real time tube amp plug-in. “Tube Saturator uses state of the art circuit simulation technology to capture every nuance of an analog circuit.” The circuit simulation technology is extremely CPU intensive they say, and I agree to that, because my Mac Book Pro didn´t manage to play a song with this plugin in Waveburner software. In Logic Pro 7 it worked fine but still, you can´t load so much plug-ins to your song if you use this plugin unless you use freeze function of your software.

Tube Saturator has Baxandall type three-band EQ feeding two 12AX7 triode preamp stages. It has same tonal  charasteristics as you can here from a tube pre amp in the real world. To my ears this plug-in sounded very good and I think it does well what it´s supposed to do. You really can add analog warmth to your tracks with this plugin if you are after it. Tube Saturator works both mono or stereo up to 192 kHz sampling rate.

+ Sounds convincing

– Heavy load on cpu

Voxengo Elephant, Quick Review

Loudness war goes on and on – but don´t worry, there is a solution and it doesn´t cost too much. Voxengo Elephant is a mastering limiter that is transparent, doesn´t pump and gives you loudness enough for serious mastering. Voxengo Elephant is actually so good that I would compare it to Waves L2 limiter.

Voxengo Elephant has 64 bit floating point processing,  multi channel processing, 10 predefined limiter modes, A/B comparisons and noise shaped dithering. It´s available as AU and VST plugins.

+ transparency
+ sound quality
+ supports multi-channel at any standard sample rate

Sony Oxford Inflator, Quick Review

This plugin really adds something more even to a track that has already been limited very hard. With Sony Oxford Inflator you can get more loudness without any breathing or pumping. It´s not as it´s best if you try to use it as the only limiter in a stereo bus. I got best results when using it after a limiter in a drums bus or in main stereo bus. What I think that should be included is dithering. But this is still well worth buying.

+ Simple to use
+ Sound quality & results
– No dithering
